Jason’s Back!
Jason’s comeback was so big, it’s scary. Friday the 13th’s $42.2 million haul slashed the competition and box office records this President’s Day weekend as well as becoming the best opening in the franchise’s history. Not bad for a remake that only cost the studio $16 million to make. Friday had no problem frightening away financially-themed newbies Confessions of a Shopaholic and The International, while holdovers He’s Just Not That Into You and Taken were neck and neck behind Jason with $19.6 million and $19.2 million respectively.
This week’s top films pulled in an estimated $195 million in just three days, which already surpasses the biggest President’s Day weekend on record - back in 2007, it took four days for the top-earners to reach $187 million.
And, while Friday the 13th wasn’t able to beat 2007’s Ghost Rider as the best President’s Day opener of all-time (that flick burned up $45.3 million at the box office), it easily eclipsed the franchise’s previous highest-grossing premiere Freddy vs. Jason, which debuted in 2003 with $36.4 million.
Disney’s romcom Confessions starring Isla Fisher as a journalist in love with shopping rang in $15.4 million for fourth place ahead of gothy stop-motion feature Coraline’s $15 million.
Kevin James’s Paul Blart: Mall Cop became one of the first 2009 releases to reach the $100 million mark, adding $11.7 million to its $110.5 million cumulative gross.
Clive Owen thriller The International was no Mall Cop with its $10 million debut in seventh place. Altogether this week’s crop of movies kept the year’s upward trend alive with ticket sales up 45% from the same time last year when Jumper’s $27.4 million claimed the top spot.
