The fanboys came out in droves this weekend. Despite mixed reviews, Zack Snyder’s The Watchmen made a heroic debut at $55.65 million, knocking screen queen Madea down to number two.
Tyler Perry’s Madea goes to Jail pulled in $8.8 million, bringing its three-week total to $76.5 million.
Meanwhile, action thriller Taken stole the number three spot, taking in $7.45 million, bringing its overall total to $118 million.
The Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire continued to attract audiences pulling in $6.92 million this week, for an overall total of $125 million.
Paul Blart took back the fifth spot with a respectable $4.2 million ahead of He’s Just Not That Into You at the sixth spot with $4.02 million.
The animated Coraline kept steady at seventh spot with $3.3 million, and Confession of a Shopaholic was close behind at $3.12 million.
Audiences are not burning up for the Jonas Brothers, which dropped to the ninth spot in its second week, pulling in a mere $2.78 million for a total of $16.8 million.
Other notable openings, festival favorite Phoebe in Wonderland opened at $26,311 in its first week, and Tokyo! grossed $21,500 on its sole screen. Attendance continued to rise to 11.1% from the same point last year with ticket sales at 268 million compared to last year’s 242 million.
