Dr. Manhattan must be feeling pretty blue these days. The Watchmen followed its less-than-super debut with a defeat to Disney’s Race to Witch Mountain this weekend, as the Rock’s remake raked in $25 million. After a highly-anticipated, but slightly off-the-mark premiere last week, Watchmen stumbled 67% in its sophomore week, adding just $18.1 million to its $86 million cumulative gross.
Witch Mountain’s impressive opening-weekend numbers boast a career-high for star Dwayne Johnson, who’s found quite a successful tag-team partner with director Andy Fickman. Their previous outing together, Disney’s Game Plan, pulled in $23 million in 2007.
The weekend’s other remake The Last House on the Left landed at third with $14 million, while newcomer Miss March posed no real threat to the weekend’s top earners, arriving at the bottom of the top ten with $2.3 million.
Sleeper hit Taken continued to take in audiences (and stirred up talk of a sequel), taking in $6.7 million for fourth place, as money machine Tyler Perry rounded out the top five with Madea Goes to Jail earning $5.13 million.
Indie comedy Sunshine Cleaning starring Amy Adams and Emily Blunt cleaned up in its limited release, averaging $53,500 per screen.
Overall, this week’s offerings weren’t able to outdo last year’s crop, with ticket sales down 15% from the same time last spring when Horton heard cha-ching with it’s $45 million debut.
