The latest HARRY POTTER movie bust out of the gates on Wednesday and has already grossed close to $160M since then! In fact, if you count up its worldwide grosses alongside the North American numbers, the film has already made about $400M across the globe in its first 5 days of release. Not too shabby.

Its domestic gross was $20M more than its predecessor film, HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, which grossed $140M in its first 5 days of release. That film went on to make $292M in total, although many are predicting that the HALF-BLOOD PRINCE will become the 1st Potter film since the original to break the $300M domestic barrier.

The latest film also had the 2nd fastest start for a movie premiering on a Wednesday, following TRANSFORMERS 2 which grossed $200M in its first 5 days of release. THE DARK KNIGHT still maintains the record for the biggest ever 5-day opening gross, while the new POTTER flick stands 6th on that list.

As somewhat predicted in last week’s box office report, BRUNO dropped to its knees this week, losing 72% of its audience from last weekend. Most films will lose a respectable 50% from their first weekend opening, but 72% is pretty nasty spill. In fact, despite the film’s massive marketing campaign, it doesn’t look as though it will even surpass the $70M mark at this point (it sits at $50M right now). It’s to note that BORAT finished with a $128M domestic gross back in 2006.

THE HANGOVER, on the other hand, is still kicking mighty ass, even after 7 weeks of release. In fact, the film still sits in 5th place, lost only 16% of its audience from last weekend, and is now the 4th highest grossing movie of the year behind TRANSFORMERS 2, STAR TREK and UP. I finally saw it the other day and despite the over-hype about the film, enjoyed it quite a bit. Reminded me of VERY BAD THINGS, WEDDING CRASHERS and OLD SCHOOL all wrapped into one. Good shit.

BTW, did you notice that the top 3 movies of this past weekend were sequels? The 3rd instalment of the ICE AGE series looks like it’s going to reboot that franchise as it will most certainly surpass both of its predecessors in terms of overall box-office gross. The current film has already grossed $152M in its first three weeks, while the original film finished with $176M and the sequel ended up with $195M. This one looks like it will cross the illustrious $200M mark pretty soon.

Even though (500) DAYS OF SUMMER only opened on 27 screens this past weekend, the film managed to gross about $31,000 per theatre, which almost doubles the HARRY POTTER theatre/average. Along with its great reviews, except SUMMER to open wider as the summer rolls along. Pun intended.
