Box Office Results Week 12

Nic Cage totally saw this coming. His latest action thriller, Knowing, blew away the competition this weekend with an estimated $24.8 million opening while newcomers I Love You, Man and Duplicity rounded out the top three.

Last week’s topper, Race to Witch Mountain tumbled 47% to fourth place with $13 million behind the bromantic comedy I Love You, Man’s $18 million and the Julia Roberts - Clive Owen espionage romancer Duplicity’s $14.4 million.

The superhero ensemble flick Watchmen continued its long, sluggish march to the $100 million mark this week in the fifth spot, adding $6.7 million to its $98 million cumulative gross, while the rest of the week’s top ten were holdovers.

On the indie front, the magician comedy The Great Buck Howard averaged $2,127 per theater in limited release, the border-crossing drama Sin Nombre averaged an impressive $12,901 per screen average in a handful of sites and the designer documentary Valentino: The Last Emperor pulled in $20,329 at its sole screening venue.

Overall, this week’s ticket sales were just slightly below the totals from a year ago at same time when the animated comedy Horton Hears a Who held on to the top spot.
