Box Office Analysis Week 17

BeyoncĂ© hit a high note at the box office this weekend with Obsessed’s $28.5 million debut while Jamie Foxx failed to strike a chord with moviegoers as The Soloist opened with $9.7 million.

The Hand That Rocks the-Fatal Attraction-like thriller Obsessed featuring the Dreamgirls star as the jealous wife of a Stringer Bell-looking boss fooling around with his Niki Sanders-looking temp, was a surprise hit for Screen Gems, bumping last week’s chart-topper 17 Again to second place with $11.7 million.

Close behind was the Channing Tatum action flick Fighting with $11.4 million.

Opening big on Wednesday, Disney’s nature documentary Earth rounded out the top five with $8.55 million behind Foxx and Robert Downey Jr.’s Oscar bait drama about a journalist obsessed with a homeless musician.

DreamWorks Animation’s sci-fi comedy Monsters vs. Aliens added $8.52 million to its $175 million cumulative gross as last week’s second place finisher State of Play dropped to the seventh spot with $6.89 million with Hanna Montana close behind with $6.37 million.

In limited release, Tyson, the documentary about the famous ear-biting pugilist, came out fighting with a $7,817 per screen average in eleven theaters and the documentary Nursery University looked smart pulling in $13,100 in one screening.
