Box Office Analysis Week 16

Zac Efron didn’t need any help from his HSM BFFs to dance his way to the top this weekend as his breakout comedy 17 Again raked in $24.1 million to beat out State of Play’s star power and last week’s box office queen Hannah Montana.
The BBC-inspired political thriller State, starring Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck and Helen Mirren, didn’t pose much of a threat to the Big-in-reverse pic featuring Efron as a teenaged Matthew Perry, coming in at a distant second with $14.1 million.
Meanwhile, Hanna dropped a Montana-sized 61% to fourth place with $12.7 million behind the animated comedy Monsters vs Aliens’ $12.9 million as Fast & Furious slid 55% to round out the top five with $12.3 million.
It’s safe to say, audiences didn’t really spark to Crank: High Voltage. The Jason Statham sequel debuted with a dismal $6.51 million ahead of the mall cop comedy Observe and Report, which earned $4.05 million.
Sony Pictures Classics’ Broadway documentary Every Single Step proved to be one singular sensation with movegoers, averaging $9,077 in limited release while the old folks home indie comedy Is Anybody There? featuring Michael Caine also performed well, averaging $7,519 per screen in a handful of theatres.
Overall, this weekend’s top films were up 19% from the same time last year when Jackie Chan’s The Forbidden Kingdom kicked its way to the top.
