Revolution-ary Leader

A major new independent powerhouse has emerged with local distributor Leader Home Entertainment joining forces with Australian company Horizon One Entertainment.

The new joint venture Revolution Entertainment will formally launch on June 1 and will see the company bring between six to eight new releases to DVD each month.

The deal cements a partnership which began earlier this year when Leader took over the New Zealand distribution of Horizon from Roadshow. The announcement also coincides with Leader celebrating its most successful rental release to date, the Horizon film 88 Minutes, which last week spent its second week at No.2 in the rental charts. Fast & Furious lost by a Miley this weekend. After a record-breaking start, the Vin Diesel sequel couldn’t keep up with Hannah Montana: The Movie, as the tween queen raced to the top of the box office charts with an estimated $34 million debut. Fast downshifted into second place with $28 million, a 59% drop from its opening week, to bring its two-week total to $118 million. Read More »

The automotive industry may be running out of gas, but the Fast & Furious franchise is still going strong. The Vin Diesel-fueled sequel proved that four times a charm as its record-breaking $72.5 million debut raced circles around everyone at the box office. It’s the biggest opening ever for an April release and a personal best for the action series, beating out the first film and its sequel by a good $30 - $20 million, respectively. The original Fast and the Furious premiered in 2001 with $40 million and its 2003 follow-up 2 Fast 2 Furious revved up $50.4 million in its opening weekend without Diesel in the driver’s seat.
